MyNameNecklace Tutorial: 10 Tips for Filling Your Christmas Stocking

Did you ever hear the legend behind hanging Christmas stockings above the fire place? It is quite beautiful. A long time ago, there was a poor man and he three beautiful daughters. He was always worried about them after he died because he had no money to ensure they would be married off. One evening, Saint Nicholas overheard some of the villagers talking about the family. Good Ol' Saint Nick wanted to help but knew that this man, even though poor, was proud and would not take a handout. In secret that night, Saint Nicholas threw three bags of gold into their home via an open window. Now the legend is murky here - some say only one bag of gold made it into a stocking hanging over the fireplace while others say that each of the three bags went into each of the stockings - but the story ends the same. The father and his daughters woke up the next morning to find the gold hanging there. They were very happy and the girls were able to get married and of course, live happily ever after.

Now everyone with me, "Awwwwwww!"

Today we have this amazing custom of hanging stocking from the fire place for Saint Nicholas to fill on the night before Christmas. Each stocking is brightly displayed along with the name of the recipient, lest Saint Nicholas get confused! But what do you put in these Christmas stockings? Well, We have some ideas for you!

Christmas Stocking Stuffer Guide
Stockings come in all shapes and sizes, and some have really great gifts, like a personalized monogram necklace!

Step 1: Get the "Who" Out of the Way

Consider who you are giving this stocking to. Think about what they like, what their hobbies are, and obviously other factors like gender and age.

Step 2: Don't Go Breaking the Bank

We've spoken before about how gifts don't necessarily have to break the bank, but leave the more pricey gifts for under the tree. For the stocking, choose small, inexpensive items - small toys for children or office/kitchen gadgets for an adult.

**MNN Special Advice: Make a budget for each stocking or else you will spend way more than you planned!

Step 3: Toys, Toys, Toys

No matter if you are stuffing a stocking for a kid or a kid-at-heart, toys are always a great option. Popular ideas include card decks, squirt guns, bouncy balls, and maybe even a pair of cool shoelaces.

Step 4: Sweets for the Sweet Tooth

Don't forget to add some edible treats inside the stocking. Small chocolates like Kisses, Hershey's Minis, and of course, candy canes work really well. But you can also put things like single serving hot cocoa packets, gum, and prepackaged cookies. Oh, and don't forget an orange. There's a tradition behind it!

Step 5: Include Some Personal Care Products

You know those travel sized toiletries you've stock piled away somewhere from hotels or those sample products you get in magazines and drugstores? They make excellent stocking stuffers! Hand lotion, shampoos, nail polish, deodorant, toothbrushes, and hair clips are great options!

Step 6: Gadgets for the Boys, Jewelry for the Girls...and Vice Versa

Gadgets and jewelry make great gifting options. Multi-tools, flashlights, and travel-sized sewing kits are always great. But you know us - personally, we love jewelry! We have a great selection of inexpensive acrylic necklaces, as well as jewelry for kids and mens jewelry as well! Loads of options to choose from!

Step 7: What Are Their Hobbies?

Don't forget a few gifts that personalizes the stocking for them! (Even more so than personalized jewelry!) If they love art, include some colored pencils. If the recipient loves to cook, get them a nice set of measuring spoons.

Step 8: Money, That's What I Want

Because of the legend associated with the tradition, you always have to put a few dollars in the stocking!

Step 9: Give Them a Gift Card

Always include one or two gift cards to favorite shops. Popular gift card options include iTunes, Starbucks, and Amazon.

Step 10: Don't Forget Your Pets

Do you have a pet? Make them their very own stocking. Fill it with treats (of course), new toys, or even a new collar!
